The Truth about Home (Part one: Homesickness)

"And  they  admitted  that  they  were  aliens  and  strangers  on  earth.  People  who  say  such  things  show  that  they  are  looking  for  a  country  of  their  own.  If  they  had  been  thinking  of  the  country  they  had  left,  they  would  have  had  opportunity  to  return.  Instead,  they  longed  for  a  better  country - a  heavenly  one.  Therefore,  God  is  not  ashamed  to  be  called  their  God,  for  He  has  prepared  a  city  for  them."  Hebrews  11 : 13b - 16

Aliens  and  strangers...  I  have  spent  the  past  few  days  with  a  group  of  wonderful  people  who  can  all  identify  with  these  words.  MKs  (missionary  kids),  people  who  have  lived  in  countries  other  than  their  "home"  country,  their  passport  country,  because  their  parents  have  obeyed  God's  call  on  their  lives  to  make  disciples  in a  certain  country.

These  are  young  men  and  women  familiar  with  the  pain  of  good  bye,  the  sorrow  of  departure,  the  disconnectedness  of  not  quite  fitting  in,  the  deep  love  that  grows  in  a  person  of  a  people  and  a  place  -  many  people  and  place,  the  wonder  of  God's  grace  and  the  power  faith  in  Him.

These  are  people  who  are  one  thing  on  the  outside  -  in  our  case,  Australians,  but  on  the  inside,  are  a  mesh  of  cultures.  They've  grown  up  in  places  all  over  the  world,  and  their  hearts  are  divided  between  countries.

They  search  for  a  country,  for  a  place  to  belong  -  it's  part  of  why  we  return  to  this  camp,  year  after  year,  there,  we  are  all  a  family.  They  recognize  that  they  are  out  of  place,  that  they  don't  belong.

And  we  hunger.  No  matter  how  long  we  have  remained  in  one  place,  we  hunger  for  a  HOME.

And  I  think  that  that  is  one  of  the  blessings  of  being  an  MK.  That  heightened  sense  of  hunger  for  a  home.  It  isn't  quite  homesickness,  but  in  other  ways,  it  is  very,  very  much  homesickness.

It's  an  advantage  because  we  recognize,  what  others  may  fail  to  see,  that  our  home  is  not  actually  on  this  earth.  Having  lived  in  so  many  "homes"  we've  found  that  none  really  satisfy  this  hunger,  or  at  least,  that's  been  my  experience.

After  all,  as  the  writer  of  Hebrews  says,  if  we're  hungry  for  the  country  we  were  in,  or  even  a  country  we  might  one  day  be  in,  than  the  solution  is  obvious.  But  the  truth  is,  and  we  all  know  it,  even  if  we  aren't  ready  to  admit  it,  not  even  that  will  sate  our  hunger  for  home.

Because  the  truth,  the  rare,  simple,  pure  truth  is:  we  are  not  hungry  for  a  home  on  this  earth,  we  are  hungry  for  heaven.

Our  true  home  is  in  the  New  Jerusalem,  it  is  in  the  City  that  never  sees  night,  because  God  Himself  is  the  source  of  it's  light,  and  He  dwells  in  that  City.

And  whilst  we  find  contentment  in  the  knowledge  that  God  is  always  with  us,  our  souls  always  hunger  for  that  final,  true,  unending  home.

And  this  isn't  just  the  case  for  MKs,  it's  a  hunger  that  all  humans  experience,  as  this  beautiful  clip  by  MercyMe  shows.  But  in  MKs,  this  hunger  is  heightened.

Sometimes,  I  know  from  experience,  the  hunger  grows  and  almost  crushes  us.  The  desire  to  go  home  can  be  overwhelming.  The  desire  to  see  God's  face  can  be  overwhelming.

And  yet...  this  desire,  for  all  the  pain  that  goes  with  it,  is  wonderful,  as  it  drives  us  ever  closer  to  God.  At  least,  it  did  for  me.  That  is  to  say,  it  does  for  me.

I  am  an  alien  and  stranger  in  Australia.

There  are  times  where  I  feel  at  home,  times  when  I  forget  about  my  past  life,  but  I  never  forget  for  long.  It's  part  of  who  I  am,  part  of  my  life,  to  be  out  of  place.

As  it  is  part  of  all  those  who  have  heard  the  voice  of  God...  whether  they  realize  it  or  no...

Reflections on True Love and Words for Nearly-weds

Let  me  not  to  the  marriage  of  true  minds
admit  impediments;  love  is  not  love
that  alters  when  it  alteration  finds
nor  bends  with  the  remover  to  remove.

O  no!  It  is  an  ever  fixed  mark
that  looks  on  tempests  and  is  never  shaken -
it  is  the  star  to  every  wandering  bark
whose  worth's  unknown,  though  it's  height  be  taken.

Love's  not  times  fool,  though  rosy  lips  and  cheeks
within  his  bending  sickles  compass  come
love  alters  not  with  his  brief  hours  and  weeks
but  bears  it  out  even  to  the  edge  of  doom.

If  this  be  error,  and  upon  me  proved,
I  ne'er  writ,  nor  no  man  e'er  loved.

Of  all  Shakespeare's  sonnets,  this  is  my  favourite.

His  lyrical  words,  intriguing  imagery,  flowing  rhythm  and  controlled  rhyming  scheme  all  combine  to  create  one  of  the  best  expressions  of  true  Love  that  I  have  ever  come  across.

It  is  a  Love  that  stays  is  dependable  during  the  storms  of  life.

It  is  a  Love  that  remains  steadfast  and  eternal,  though  all  else  changes  with  time.

It  is  a  Love  that  is  strange  and  not  completely  understandable,  but  absolutely  vital  for  finding  ones  way  in  the  turbulence  of  life.

It  is  a  Love  that  does  not  change  just  because  something  else  has  come  a  long  to  claim  it,  but  a  Love  that  remains  faithful  when  everything  is  conspiring  to  take  it  away.

These  images  of  Love  can  be  found  throughout  the  Bible,  but  the  Bible  takes  it  one  step  further:

Love  is  sacrifice,  it  is  agape,  and  only  through  God  can  we  really  receive  and  pass  on  this  Love,  because  only  God  as  agape  loved  perfectly  -  to  the  point  of  death  by  crucifixion.

The  Love  demanded  in  the  Bible,  the  Love  demand  for  God  and  for  each  other,  is  this  Love,  this  agape,  life-giving  Love.

It  is  HUGE.  It  is  Love.  And  it  is  True.

Last  Saturday,  I  had  the  honour  of  attending  the engagement  party  of  two  dear  friends.  He  used  to  be  my  youth  group  leader,  her  I  have  only  met  a  handful  of  times,  but  I  already  know  her  to  be  a  woman  of  beauty  and  agape  love.  As  he  is.

It  has  been  a  privilege  to  watch  their  relationship  grow  and  develop,  and  it  was  a  joy  to  watch  them  at  the  party. Their  relationship  is  based  not  on  their  love  for  each  other,  but  their  love  for  God.  Their  joy  in  His  eternal  agape  love  and  their  willingness  to  be  a  tool  to  transmit  that  along  to  the  rest  of  the  world.

You  could  see  it.

You  could  see  it  in  the  love  their  eyes  held  for  each  other  and  the  way  the  worked  together,  and  it  could  be  heard  in  every  word  they  said  about  each  other.

True  love.  They  have  found  true  love.  Not  in  each  other,  but  in  God.  God  who  has  expressed  His  Love  for  them  both  by  leading  them  to  each  other.

Now,  as  they  move  towards  marriage,  my  prayer  is  that  they  will  remember  the  truth  about  Love.

The  Truth  that  Love  is  Eternal.  The  Truth  that  Love  is  Vital.  The  Truth  that  Love  is  Faithful.  The  Truth  that  Love  is  Demanding.  The  Truth  that  Love  is  Sacrifice.  The  Truth  the  Love  is  God  because  God  is  the  Source  of  all  Love  and  the  Ultimate  Expresser  of  Love.

I  pray  that  they  will  always  remember  the  Truth  about  their  love  for  each  other.

That  it  is  Gift  from  God.  That  without  Him  it  is  dead.  That  it  is  Given  to  them  that  they  may  share  it  first  with  each  other,  then  with  any  children  who  may  come  along  and  finally  with  all  those  they  come  in  contact  with.

I  pray  that  each  day  they  are  married  they  will  wake  up,  look  at  each  other  a  remember  that  no  matter  how  hard  it  is,  they  are  a  Gift  to  each  other,  a  precious,  hand-made  expression  of  God's  love.

I  pray  that  every  day  they  will  seek  to  live  out  the  agape  Love  that  God  has  poured  into  both,  Loving  each  other  through  acts  of  service,  even  when  their  desire  is  to  demand  service.

I  pray  that  every  day  they  remember  that  each  is  Beautifully  and Wonderfully  made  and  that  they  seek  to  say  so,  even  in  the  midst  of  hurt  and  anger,  that  God's  words  of  Love  may  find  a  voice  in  them.

I  pray  that  every  day  they  come  before  God  together,  spending  time  with  the  Source  of  their  Love  and  with  each  other,  that  they  do  not  forget  the  foundation  of  their  relationship.

I  pray  that  every  day  that  are  willing  to  set  down  what  ever  arms  and  barriers  they  wish  to  build,  and  remember  to  act  as  the  Forgivng  arms  of  God  for  each,  for  Love  forgives  all  things.

And  finally,  I  thank  God  that  the  presence  of  His  love  in  them  has  and  will  enrich  our  church  family  as  it  flows  from  them  onto  all  of  us.

Because  there  is  no  greater  Love  than  that  a  man  gives  of  himself  and  his  life,  laying  it  down  as  an  offering  for  the  uplifting  of  others,  in  the  image  of  the  Christ.  Amen.

Heart Bleeding on the Floor

I'm  standing  there  before  them,  smashing  through  defenses  and  screens  and  projections  that  I've  built  over  the  years.

I'm  smashing  through  the  years  of  faking  strength  and  hiding  tears  and  blood.  I'm  smashing  through  it  all.

It's  time  to  let  them  see,  time  to  let  the  whole  world  see  that  I'm  the  same  as  everyone  else.

I'm  a  heart  bleeding  on  the  floor.

I'm  a  heart  blue  and  black  staining  a  floor  red.

No  more  lies  that  the  world  doesn't  hurt.  No  more  pretense  that  the  abuse  was  minimal.  No  more  hiding  the  story  of  more  people  than  we  care  to  imagine.

Those  stories  are  true,  and  if  we  who  have  them  hide  them,  the  world  is  the  worse  for  it.

Because  as  my  bloodied,  blackened  heart  is  shown,  so  too  is  the  Hand  of  the  Master  Healer  who  is  tenderly  sowing  the  pieces  back  together.  The  Hand  of  the  Master  Healer  who  is  lovingly  closing  the  wounds  and  creating  something  beautiful  with  the  scars.

Shown  too  is  the  Blood  of  the  Lamb  crucified  at  Golgotha,  the  Blood  that  is  taking  my  Red  stains  and  washing  them  White.

Shown  too  is  the  Light  of  the  God  who  stepped  down  into  Darkness,  into  my  Darkness,  and  filled  it  with  His  Light.

And  I'm  still  smashing  those  defenses,  I'm  still  cutting  through  the  screens  and  the  projections,  but  one  day  they'll  all  be  gone.

One  day  you  will  all  be  able  to  see  the  embroidery  of  the  scars  on  my  heart,  the  white  washed  floor  on  which  I  sit,  and  you'll  know  that  our  God  is  a  God  of  Love,  of  Power  and  of  Faith,  because  I  am  just  a  heart  bleeding  on  the  floor  of  Life,  same  as  you.
