What I have Learnt So Far - and Humbly Pass on to You

So  my  sister  -  the  middle  one  -  she's  started  her  last  year  of  school.  She's  started  it,  though  in  some  ways,  her  last  year  hadn't  really  stopped.  She's  started  it  and  she's  got  assignments  and  exams  and  hours  of  work  pouring  out  of  her  ears  and  working  its  way  into  her  eyes,  her  mind  and  her  heart.  She  and  her  friends.

And  I've  spent  a  fair  bit  of  time  with  them  over  this  past  month - seen  them  as  they've  made  the  most  of  these  holidays  before  their  final  year  at  school.  Seen  them  as  they've  consolidated  and  re-affirmed  their  friendship,  determined  not  to  let  the  threatening  tide  of  grades  and  performances  and  ranks  wear  away  at  their  hearts  and  their  friendships.  And  It
Each  and  every  one  of  them  is  God-fearing.  Is  loving.  Is  strong.  Is  brave.  They  are  wonderful  and  intelligent,  and  I  have  said  this  before  and  I  will  say  it  again:  I  am  so  proud  of  my  beautiful  sister,  and  I  thank  God  for  the  friends  He  has  put  in  her  life.

And  here  is  a  little  message  from  my  heart  to  theirs,  and  anyone  else  in  a  similar  position.

Dear  brothers  and  sisters - for  such  a  relationship  I  can  claim  through  Christ,

The  World  will  try  to  conform  you  to  their  standards.  It  will  seek  to  tell  you  that  how  you  perform  is  all  that  matters,  that  what  you  do  is  who  you  are.  It  will  push  you  to  achieve,  and  achieve  regardless  of  the  cost  to  yourself  and  to  those  you  love.  It  will  want  you  to  put  your  trust  in  your  grades - because  when  your  trust  is  in  something  so  changeable,  then  you  are  off  balance,  unfocused  and  easy  prey  for  the  Enemy  that  threatens  everyone,  but  especially  those  who  are  God's  children.

And  into  this  the  World  will  come.  The  World  will  what  you  to  act  a  certain  way,  to  do  a  certain  thing.  It  may  try  making  you  wear  a  mask,  conceal  the  Truth  of  your  heart  and  your  mind  and  your  soul,  because  the  truth  of  those  three  is  a  powerful  light,  a  candle  burning  bright.  And  if  you're  trust  is  in  the  Lord,  then  it  is  burning  bright  with  a  Truth  the  World  does  not  wish  to  face.  It  burns  with  the  Truth  that  we  have  fallen  short  of  the  Glory  of  our  Creator.  It  burns  with  the  Truth  that  we  are  imperfect.  And  this  the  world  has  no  desire  to  hear,  no  desire  to  see.  So  it  seeks  to  snuff  it  out,  to  hide  it.  And  the  World  knows  that  the  surest  way  to  snuff  out  a  candle  is  to  smother  it.  And  so  it  seeks  to  smother  the  Truth  of  your  heart  and  your  mind  and  your  soul  before  it  has  seen  the  Whole  Truth  burning  there.

The  World  seeks  to  smother  the  Truth  burning  in  your  because  it  is  too  afraid  of  the  bad  news  there  to  look  long  enough  to  see  the  good  news.  The  Gospel.  It  does  not  see  -  and  sadly  often  does  not  wish  to  see  -  the  Truth  that  our  Creator  God  stepped  into  our  fallen,  broken,  imperfect  lives  and  became  the  God-Man.  The  Truth  that  Grace  is  on  offer  and  that  all  who  chose  to  accept  it  are  raised  up  to  Glory  of  our  Creator,  are  made  perfect.  But,  for  all  the  World  does  not  wish  to  see  this,  the  World  needs  to  see  this.

My  friends,  you  know  the  Truth.  I  see  it  in  the  way  you  treat  each  other,  in  the  activities  you  choose  to  be  involved  with,  in  the  topics  that  bring  your  eyes  to  life.  It  is  my  prayer,  my  earnest  prayer,  that  you  will  resist  the  schemes  of  the  World.  That  you  will  always  know  that  it  is  not  what  you  do  and  how  you  perform  that  matters,  but  who  you  are  and  into  what  you  place  your  life.  Recognise  the  mask  the  world  wants  you  to  wear  for  what  they  are:  a  basket  with  which  to  cover  the  Truth  burning  within  you.

And  as  I  have  spent  time  with  you  all  this  past  month,  I  have  been  saddened  that  I  am  moving  away,  for  I  have  felt  a  pull  on  my  heart  towards  each  of  you.  I  pull  that  tells  me  to  love  and  serve  you  as  I  can  to  make  this  year,  if  not  easier,  then  pleasanter  for  all  of  you.  And  I  know  that  my  location  will  limit  my  ability  to  do  this.  I  know  that  there  are  many  people  in  your  lives  who  are  loving  you  and  praying  for  you  and  who  you  can  turn  to  for  aid  in  times  of  stress,  but  I  want  you  to  know  that  you  are  always  welcome  to  shoot  me  a  message,  by  Facebook  or  phone,  or  that  I  am  always  ready  to  put  on  the  kettle  (should  you  happen  to  come  to  my  door),  whether  you  have  need  to  pour  your  heart  out  or  simply  to  sit  a  moment  and  just  be.

And  that  bring  me  to  one  last  thing  I  wish  to  say.  I'm  sure  you've  heard  this  all  before,  but  I'll  say  it  hear  too:  do  make  sure  you  sit  a  moment  and  simply  be.  Take  time  to  close  your  eyes,  breathe  in,  appreciate  the  fact  that  you  are  alive  and  breathe  out  a  prayer  of  thankfulness  to  our  God,  our  Provider.  Take  time  to  admire  sunsets  and  praise  the  Great  Artist.  Take  time  to  sip  delicious  drinks  or  savour  tasty  foods.  Take  time  to  laugh.  Take  time  to  cry.  And  with  each  moment,  turn  to  God  as  our  Comforter  and  our  Father.  You'll  find  that  time  slips  through  your  fingers  as  sand  does,  but  don't  forget  to  stop  for  a  moment  each  day  to  appreciate  the  Creation  around  you  and  the  friends  that  are  with  you.  This  is  so,  so  important.  Because  as  long  as  you  make  time  to  enjoy  Creation  and  speak  with  God,  then  you'll  find  the  World  can  not  steal  enjoyment  and  your  relationship  with  God  from  you.

I  am  young  yet,  I  know.  I  am  not  much  further  along  in  life  than  you,  I  know. But  I  do  hope  and  pray  this  is  of  some  help,  some  encouragement,  some  blessing  in  your  life  for  you.  And  with  that,  I  shall  conclude.  May  God  bless  you  all  richly,  may  this  year  be  a  joy  (though  it  brings  with  it  pain),  and  may  you  always  know  that  you  are  loved  not  for  what  you  do,  but  who  you  are.

With  love,
Laura

Some Reflections, One Resolution and Thanksgiving #45

So,  between  the  wedding  on  Saturday,  this  awesome  post  by  my  friend  Mel,  the  run  of  the  mill  jokes  at  school  and  the  shows  that  I  have  on  my  list  of  things  to  watch  following  the  completion  of  my  exams  (just  one  week  left!),  relationships,  romance  and  love  has  been  coming  up  a  lot.

And  I  mean,  a  lot.

It  seems  like  everywhere  I  look,  people  are  falling  in  love  (with  the  exception  of  Mel,  who  has  made  an  awesome  decision  -  go  read  that  post!  Also,  you  go,  girl!)  and  starting  or  continuing  romantic  relationships.

Which  is  awesome  and  all,  but  it  has  got  me  thinking  about  that  kind  of  thing.  And  what  my  attitude  is  going  to  be  about  it  once  I  finish  with  high  school  forever!

One  of  the  things  I've  realized,  and  I  said  as  much  at  youth  group  on  Friday,  that  the  amount  of  romance  I  have  been  seeing  has  been  making  me  less  content  with  being  single.  Making  it  harder  to  celebrate  the  fact  that  at  this  moment  in  time,  God  has  given  me  the  incredible  gift  of  singleness  and  easier  to  wonder  why  I  don't  have  that  special  someone  (which  is  silly  seeing  as  how  much  of  my  life  I  have  left!).

This  question  is  made  even  more  pertinent  (the  first  one  about  my  attitude)  by  the  fact  that  I  will  soon  be  18,  which  is  the  age  I  have  always  said  I  will  start  considering  the  possibility  of  dating.

Mel's  post  (if  you  haven't  already  -  go  read!)  gave  me  a  lot  to  think  about.

Now,  my  starting  attitude  is  slightly  different  to  hers.  I'm  coming  more  from  the  it-would-be-nice-to-have-a-boyfriend-but-honestly-I-don't-need-or-particularly-want-one  camp  (yay  for  long  words!).  Still,  that  is  something that  could  very  easily  change  next  year  as  I  meet  new  guys.  Plus,  even  coming  from  that  camp,  I  still  have  moments  with  most  of  the  guys  I've  come  across  where  I  stop  and  analyse  whether  or  not  I  would  want  to  date  them  (so  when  I  say  I  wouldn't  date  someone,  I  honestly  would  not  date  them).

Still,  what  she  was  talking  about  was  still  challenging.

The  question  I  then  asked  myself  was:  am  I  ready  to  consider  being  in  a  relationship?

After  some  reflection  (it  didn't  take  long)  I  decided  that  no,  I  wasn't.

Sure,  it  would  be  lovely  to  be  in  a  relationship  with a  guy  who  I  can  hug  when  I'm  having  a  rough  day,  or  who'll  come  over  and  do  random  stuff  with  just  because,  and  someone  who  can  lead  me  and  guide  me  closer  to  God.  BUT,  I  am  not  yet  ready  for  that.

See,  the  thing  is,  I'm  not  yet  at  that  point  where  I  am  so  deeply  in  love  with  God  that  He  will  remain  the  centre  of  my  relationship  and  my  life.  At  this  point  in  time,  it  would  be  far  too  easy  for  me  to  start  idolizing  the  guy  and  not  my  God.

And  that  is,  for  me,  a  big  no-no.

God,  and  God  alone,  has  the  right  to  the  centerpiece  of  my  life.  He,  and  He  alone,  as  the  right  to  be  Master  and  Ruler  of  my  heart.

Besides,  He  is  awesome  and  wonderful  and  incredible,  and  why  would  I  want  to  love  anyone  else  more  than  Him?

As  well  as  this,  a  secondary  point,  my  character  is  not  yet  ready  to  act  as  the  woman  in  a  romance.  I  still  have  a  lot  of  growth  ahead  of  me  before  I  am  ready  to  be  the  kind  of  woman  who  can  unconditionally  love  and  support  a  man.  Don't  read  that  wrong  -  I'm  not  waiting  to  be  perfect!  I  just  now  that  at  the  moment,  I  am  not  ready  for  it.

So,  I  have  decided  on  this:

Next  year,  I  am  planning  to  do  Year  13,  an  awesome  gap  year  program  that  involves  Bible  study  and  ministry.  I  am  going  to  devote  that  year  to  developing  my  relationship  with  God.

There  will  be  no  development  of  romantic  relationships  in  that  year.

The  focus  will  be  on  falling  deeper  in  love  with  GOD  and  building  friendships  with  the  people  I  meet.

If  any  guy  wants  to  date  me,  I'm  sorry  in  advance  to  him  (chances  are,  admittedly,  slim),  but  the  answer  is  no.

And  I  figure,  if  he  is  the  right  guy,  or  is  serious  about  pursuing  and  caring  for  my  heart,  then  he'll  not  only  be  willing  to  wait,  but  will  also  support  me  in  my  decision  and  be  happy  to  just  be  my  friend  (should  this  scenario  happen,  I  have  some  close  girlfriends  that  I  will  ask  to  help  keep  me  accountable  to  the  boundaries  that  will  be  established).

The  important  thing  for  me  next  year,  is  to  fall  in  love  with  God.  To  grow  as  His  child  and  to  bring  Him  honour.

The  purpose  is  not  to  prepare  myself  for  romance,  rather,  I  have  decided  to  abstain  from  romance  in  order  to  focus  on  the  far  more  important  Love  of  my  Life.

And  I  ask  all  you  who  read  this  post  to  hold  me  accountable  to  this.  To  challenge  me  if  a  relationship  starts  to  develop,  to  slap  me  if  I  ignore  your  challenge,  and  to  be  challenging  me  about  my  relationship  with  God.  The  last  thing  I  want  to  do  is  get  complacent!

At  the  end  of  next  year,  I'll  probably  revisit  the  question  and  decide  whether  I  wish  to  keep  abstaining  from  romance  or  will  be  open  to  the  possibility  of  a  relationship.

So  check  in  with  me  then  to  find  out!

Also,  I've  just  realized  that  I  haven't  continued  with  the  thought  about  contentment  in  singleness - being  purposeful  about  being  single  will,  I  am  certain,  help  me  with  it.  Also,  if  I  find  myself  getting  too  discontent,  well,  bye-bye  romcoms  for  a  while!

And  now,  on  a  completely  unrelated  note  -  my  thanksgiving  point!  Christmas  is  on  the  45th  day  from  now!

So,  today  I  am  very  thankful  for  the  exams  I  sat.  They  had  the  potential  to  be  absolutely  devastating,  and,  praise  the  Lord,  the  weren't!  Still  my  worst  exams  in  this  lot  to  date,  but  they  were  not  devastating,  which  gives  me  great  hope  as  they  are  the  ones  I  feared  the  most  (short  of  tomorrow  morning's  exam).

So,  thank  God  that  the  exams  were  good  and  I  was  able  to  recall  most  of  what  I  had  learnt.  It  is  such  a  weight  off  my  shoulders!  Only  6  left  now!!

Thanksgiving #52 - Gifts of Prayer

I  sat  behind  the  desk  at  the  back  of  the  room,  my  leg  twitching  and  my  heart  racing.  The  teachers  moved  around  the  room,  passing  out  the  exam  papers  and  I  had  to  close  my  eyes  and  breathe  and  pray.

It  was  hard  to  believe  my  final  exams  and  finally  started.  The  thought  of  it  was  a  little  overwhelming.  I  prayed  and  asked  God  for  peace  of  mind  and  clarity  of  thought.

As  I  prayed,  the  names  of  all  those  people  who  had  told  me  they  are  praying  for  me  flowed  through  my  mind.

It  helped,  at  least  a  little.

The  knowledge  that  there  were  people  who  cared  for  me  enough  to  bring  both  me  and  my  exams  before  God  and  pray  on  my  behalf  about  them  was  encouraging  and  reassuring.

And  so  my  point  of  thanksgiving  today,  on  the  52nd  day  before  Christmas  is  this:

I  am  so  thankful  for  my  friends  and  family  and  the  care  they  lavish  on   me.  But  most  of  all,  I  am  so,  so  grateful  for  their  Gifts  of  Prayer.  And  the fact  that  those  Gifts  were  heard  and  received  by  the  One  who  has  the  power  to  answer  them.
